MONTREAL – Official Opposition Housing critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga) congratulate Leilani Farha on her appointment as Special housing Rapporteur to the UN’s Human Rights Council.
“Miss Farha is an eminent figure in her field. This is without doubt a well-deserved appointment. She will provide UN oversight for housing here in Canada and around the world, and I am sure she will carry out her new functions with distinction,” said Boutin-Sweet.
Leilani Farha is currently the executive director of Canada Without Poverty. She is a human-rights lawyer with an impressive track record, especially in housing rights.
“This is role is made all the more important in Canada, where 1.5 million citizens lack access to decent and affordable housing,” said Boutin-Sweet. “As a result, the NDP has tabled a bill aiming to create a nation-wide strategy that ensures safe, adequate, accessible and affordable housing for all.”
Let’s not forget that Canada is the only country in the OECD that does not have a national housing strategy.
