LAC-MÉGANTIC: NEW DEMOCRATS CALL FOR MEETING BETWEEN OTTAWA AND QUEBEC
September 26th, 2013 - 1:12pm
OTTAWA — Instead of closing their eyes to the Lac-Mégantic tragedy, the Conservative government should meet with the Quebec government as soon as possible to develop a cleanup strategy for the region.
“More than three months have passed since the tragedy, and the Conservatives have done nothing with regards to the decontamination of the land,” said New Democrat Infrastructure Critic Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga). “Ottawa needs to sit down with the Government of Quebec to work together on a real action plan for Lac-Mégantic.”
It has become clear that the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway does not have enough insurance to cover cleanup costs. “The Conservatives cannot expect Quebecers to foot the whole bill themselves as railway safety is under federal jurisdiction,” added Boutin-Sweet.
