The NDP opposition motion to prevent Conservatives from limiting debate without reason
OTTAWA – House Leader and MP for Windsor-Tecumseh, Joe Comartin, tabled a motion today to prevent Conservatives from continuing to undermine Canadian democracy by limiting debate on bills and fast-tracking the legislative process, which they’ve already done seven times since the beginning of this parliamentary session.
NDP Leader Nycole Turmel called on the Conservatives to stop hiding from the Opposition.
“The regulation concerning closure and time allocation for debates on bills must be modified so that Conservatives stop shutting down debate prematurely without reason,” said Turmel. “Limiting debate is an affront to democracy.”
In its motion, the NDP proposes that the Speaker of the House conduct a study and make recommendations in order to modify the regulation concerning closure and time allocation for debates. Under the new provisions, a minister would be required to justify their request for closure.
“Since the resumption of work in the House, the arrogant and defensive Conservatives are hiding from the opposition and hiding from Canadians. They use the same excuses to limit debate, time after time,” said Turmel.
“New Democrats will ensure that MPs are able to do their job. Canadians sent us to the House of Commons and want to see us doing our jobs properly, but it’s not happening because of this out of touch government that doesn’t listen to the concerns of Canadians and limits debate on issues that directly affect them.”
